In 1993 the RNY gastric bypass had its 100th anniversary -- the only new additions to it were the use of surgical staples (imported from Russia in the 60's) and performance of the operation through a laparoscope. In 1993 the first adjustable gastric band was placed in Europe. Since that time over 250,000 have been placed world-wide. At least ten times safer than the bypass, and unlike the gastric bypass -- the band is adjustable. In our practice we have performed a lot of RNY gastric bypass and duodenal switch operations. But the new technology has proven itself, and the band is the only weight loss operation we perform. When the RNY bypass and duodenal switch operations need revision -- they are revised to the lapband. As a result, we now have the largest collection of revision other weight loss operations to the band than anyone in the Southwest. We have also seen other operations come back. The Vertical Sleeve Gastroplasty is the first part of a duodenal switch operation -- but when it fails-- we put a band on it. Some are advocating endoscopic fixing for revision, which is another version of suturing the stoma with surgery (Stomaphy X) -- and we expect the same high failure rate. The band allows an adjustable opening, made for your lifestyle, not something off the shelf with a lot of staples. |
